I was detailing the 2012 Outback, and found this sticker under the cargo floor:
This sticker clearly says WGN, meaning wagon. The Outback is still considered a wagon, at least internally at Subaru.

No, THIS is a wagon.
That’s a bloated crossover.

The post-2009 Outback is a wagon like the PT Cruiser is a light truck

I agree and I wonder how it would look lowered. Heck the X1 would be a cool hatch if it was lowered too. Just to be clear, I’m not saying it has to be “stanced” or “hellaflush”, just lower it and throw slightly smaller wheels on it.
I do miss when the forester used to be a wagon though

Um, my land cruiser is also a wagon.
Digit 4 of my VIN is “H”

FWIW, my Crosstrek was considered a Wagon too, for insurance purposes.

According to my Michigan title, the Escape is a station wagon.

Fair enough. That does seem odd though.
Subaru considers the Tribeca an SUV in their VIN scheme (X), while it considers the Outback a wagon.

Arbitrary categories are weird.

What’s the point of vehicle catagories again?
![]() 06/08/2015 at 15:44 |

It’s because it’s just an Impreza with a slight lift, different wheels and extra plastic on the wheel wells.

My Murano is a Sportwagon according to my insurance. /winning

If someone where to put raised suspension and plastic cladding on this, would it become a crossover, too?
![]() 06/08/2015 at 15:53 |

It’s still a wagon, I have a 2013 and it’s the best outback they have ever made. I haven’t driven the 2015 but that might be better.

If we are defining the term “crossover” by raised suspension and body cladding, then that isn’t a wagon either.
This is a wagon.

2.5i or 3.6R?

This is a knife
Wait, what are we doing?
![]() 06/08/2015 at 15:57 |

2.5i premium with a 6 spd MT. All that “premium” means is it has heated seats and blue tooth.

Great choice! It’s too bad you can’t get a 6 speed in the Outback in the US anymore.

This one is my personal favorite. Just low enough, and not slammed.

The 6spd was $1,000 less than the CVT and they gave me more discount off MSRP because it had been on the lot a while.

I can imagine. The 6-speeds were not that popular in those cars.
![]() 06/08/2015 at 19:31 |

And the PT Cruiser was considered a truck.

A bunch of the Outback’s overall height is due to its massive standard roof rack that’s actually useful. Other CUVs don’t come with it standard, so the height comparison isn’t apples to apples.
The Outback is DEFINITELY a wagon, since it’s exactly like the Legacy wagon (which we don’t get in the US anymore), except with a bit more ride height and scuff resistant plastic trim.

That’s a very good point.
